This is an academic year tenure-leading position as an Assistant or Associate Professor with a possible appointment or joint appointment in the Department of Biological Systems Engineering, School of Natural Resources, or Department of Agronomy and Horticulture. Appointment(s) will depend on the background and interests of the individual and best fit to academic unit(s).

Research (75%): The incumbent will lead a research program focused on identifying, developing and evaluating in-situ and/or remote sensing technology to recognize environmental plant stresses (e.g., water, nutrient, pest, or disease). Research will include real-time sensing systems for plant phenotyping as well as sensing systems to improve crop production. The incumbent will collaborate with faculty in IANR’s Stress Biology Team, Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies, Automated High-Throughput Phenotyping Center and other faculty identifying or developing sensors and verifying their application in monitoring plant health. It is expected that the incumbent will build collaborations, as needed, with faculty from disciplines including plant science, engineering, and computer science. The incumbent will establish mutually supportive relationships with the Center for Plant Science Innovation, Research and Extension Centers, and Innovation Campus. The incumbent is expected to have a vigorous and vibrant research program that attracts funding from diverse sources such as federal, commodity, international foundations, and industry. Research results will be published in refereed scientific journals and presented at professional meetings. Advising of undergraduate and graduate student research projects is expected.

Teaching (25%): The incumbent will contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching programs, advise undergraduate students, advise graduate students, serve on graduate committees, and contribute to curriculum development. The addition of an interdisciplinary graduate level course related to advanced sensing systems involving the design, evaluation, and integration of sensors into crop production systems would be desirable. The incumbent will contribute to the IANR K-12 education activities to enhance science literacy.

In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the Administrative Unit, College/Division, Institute, and or University level.
