The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) seeks nominations for assistant professors and senior postdoctoral researchers who are transitioning into faculty positions to participate inthe society’s Interactive Mentoring Activities for Grantsmanship Enhancement (IMAGE) Grant Writing Workshop, July 14-16, 2016, in Washington, D.C. The IMAGE grantwriting workshop is a critical part of a multipronged faculty-mentoring initiative that provides faculty members with the individualized guidance required to secure extramural funding.

For the past few years, the ASBMB has been working to identify and address the barriers that prevent early-career faculty members from securing research support from federal agencies. In response to the society’s findings, the ASBMB is hosting its fourth annual workshop for early-career faculty and postdoctoral researchers in biochemistry and molecular biology to assist them in grant-writing and career development. Nearly 40% of participants from the first two cohorts since have secured extramural funding, including standard NSF grants, the NSF CAREER, NIH New Innovator, NIH RO1, and NIH R15 awards. These investigators often cite the feedback at this workshop as integral elements for their success.

Key features of the workshop will include:

• Talks by NSF program officers about funding opportunities and strategies for successful proposal submission
• Presentations by attendees on ideas and approaches for federal funding, which will be followed by critical feedback from a panel of expert reviewers
• A mock review panel to provide insight into the grant review process
• Case-study driven discussions related to beginning a career in academia, ethical standards of conduct, and strategies for long-term success
• Opportunities for individualized post-workshop mentoring by established scientists
• Significant opportunities for networking with other attendees and faculty mentors

We invite you to nominate assistant professors (preferably within their first three years) and senior postdoctoral researchers preparing to transition into independent academic positions to participate in this workshop.

Nomination materials must be submitted to the ASBMB by Friday, May 6, 2016. A limited number of travel awards are available to support the participation of promising postdoctoral scientists.
