Dear Friend of Puerto Rican Wildlife: We are starting a new project to sequence the Puerto Rican Parrot (Amazona vittata) Genome. This is to bring attention to the one of the rarest birds in the world and to promote the local research efforts at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, and to bring it to the forefront of genome research. We believe that we with your help, we can make it happen, and Puerto Rican parrot genome will become the first Caribbean bird to have its genome available for public education and conservation research. We will be organizing a fundraiser to collect private funds at 5 p.m. on June 8, 2011 at the lobby of the Biology Building at UPR-M. We will invite university professors, and the alumni of the university, because we believe that this investigation should be supported by the people and businesses of Puerto Rico. The fundraiser will include an art show of paintings of the parrots. We ask you to help us to organize and to support our fundraising effort. The activity will also feature genome technology and a ruffle with prizes like trip to the breeding facility, posters, art prints, and books. If you cannot attend, but still would like to help, we accept tax-deductible donations that can be mailed as personal check or money order to: Proyecto del Genoma de la Cotorra Puertorriqueña Departamento de Biología Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez Call Box 9000 Mayagüez, PR 00681-9000 and indicate it is for the Puerto Rican Parrot genome project We hope to see you on Wednesday at 5.
