Residents of northeastern Puerto Rico display a rare genetic mutation that causes a new autoinflammatory syndrome caled DIRA (deficiency of the interleukin-1 receptor antagonist). This syndrome presents a variety of symptoms such as inflammation of the bone tissue and the periosteum, pain and bone deformities, and a rash that can extend all over the body.
