Capeco has to help clean up the environment

With the purpose of minimizing the environmental impact of the October 23rd, 2009 explosion at the Caribbean Petroleum Corporation (Capeco) facilities, the company has to buy the neighboring wetland of Las Cucharillas and clean it up. Once the process is complete, Capeco has to transfer the land to the Department of Natural Resources with no cost to the agency.

It's been 18 years since Puerto Rico set its goal of recycling 35% of the solid waste produced in the Island. Today, recycling barely reaches 10%. A lack of interest and incentives from the government are partly to blame.
