The Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust  (PRSTRT) announced the establishment of the Vector Control Unit of Puerto Rico after receiving official announcement of the Center for Diseases Control & Prevention (CDC) for a collaborative agreement for this purpose. Such collaborative agreement will give the Trust a grant to create, manage and operate this unit.

USDA Forest Service

The USDA Forest Service has launched the Draft Revised Land Management Plan (Draft Plan) and Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) for the El Yunque National Forest. This Land Management Plan, once it is approved, will guide management activities on nearly 29,000 acres of National Forest System lands in Eastern Puerto Rico for the next 10 to 15 years.

The agricultural biotechnology industry in Puerto Rico is solid and growing and ready to face the competition from other jurisdictions, said the Puerto Rico Agriculture Biotecnology Industrial Association (Prabia). The companies that integrate this consortium are AgReliant Genetics, Bayer CropScience, Dow AgroSciences, DuPont Pioneer, Illinois Crop Improvement Association, Monsanto and Syngenta.

Condado Beach, between La Concha and Marriott hotels, is one of the most visited by tourists and locals and it's also one of the most dangerous ones due to rip currents. To address the issue a group of residents, supported by technical and scientific staff, are proposing the installation of an artificial reef, 150 meters from the coast.

Departament of Energy awards $5.7 million grant to consortium led by Turabo University

The U.S. Department of Energy approved funding for a consortium of Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs) and national laboratories, led by the Puerto Rico Energy Center (PREC) of Turabo University. The members of the consortium are: University of New Mexico, University of Texas El Paso, Miami Dade College, Universidad of Puerto Rico Mayagüez, Sandia National Laboratory and National Energy Technology Laboratory.
