A group of researchers from the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez, Ponce and Río Piedras campuses received an award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to increase the retention and graduation of engineering students attending Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs).

FDI Clinical Research, a clinical research institution located in San Juan, and directed by Dr. José F. Rodríguez Orengo, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, Massachusetts, announced that they were awarded two research grants from the National Institutes of Health for over $3.5 millionfor the next five years.

Eight new awards will help researchers examine the health impacts in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the physical damage and community-level hardships left by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017. The grants are funded by The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), part of the National Institutes of Health.
