Talking about the brain drain

The Department of Social Sciences of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez held a forum titled The brains that leave… to discuss the brain drain specialized talents from the Island. Most of the people that leave the Island are trained in Science and Engineering, and decide to leave searching for better pay and labor opportunities. There are two kinds of brain drain: a good one and a bad one. The negative brain drain contributes to the deficit in certain areas of the work force that are necessary so that Puerto Rico can accomplish its goals in the knowledge based economy, while the good brain drain is the one that allows students to go and complete their studies or work in the United States and come back with years of experience.

Cancer rate increases among Puerto Rican women

In the last few years the total cancer incidence among Puerto Rican women increased by almost 1.5%, while in men it was reduced by 2%. Cancer is the second most common cause of death among Puerto Ricans and Hispanics in the United States. Breast cancer was the most common among Puerto Rican women, and prostate cancer the most common among men. These were followed by colorectal cancer in both men and women.

Ready the scale model for the new Puerto Rican solar house

Students and faculty from the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras and Mayaguez revealed the scale model of what would be the solar house they will bring to compete in Decathlon 2007. This competition consists in the design, construction and operation of a 800 cubic feet house that operates only on solar energy. The annual event is sponsored by the Renewable Energy Laboratory of the Department of Energy of the United States, and promotes the development of houses that use this kind of sustainable energy. They design, which started taking form in January, includes a 100 students from both campuses and incorporates biological fundamentals as a base to the house’s energetic auto sufficiency.

The Puerto Rico Seismic Network of the Geology Department of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez celebrated an Open House to educate thousands of students, from elementary to high school, about sciences and how important they are in our daily life. This activity was part of the Earth Sciences Week that aims to promote interests for this branch of science and its applications.

Agricultural Extention educates students about coral reefs

The Larga Vida a los Corales (Long Live the Coral Reefs) project, from the Agricultural Extension Service of the Agricultural Sciences faculty of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez, oriented students, affiliated to the Juventud Program and 4-H Clubs from 18 municipalities, on how to take care of the marine environment. The children and youth received seven lessons, where they discussed subjects ranging from pollution, sedimentation, and the use of pesticides at home and in farms. They also talked about water quality and environmental protection methods. After the lessons were finished, the students visited a natural environment where they observed marine species and the coral reefs.

Hard to recruit health professionals

According to the Department of Health, there are 68 hospital institutions in Puerto Rico, including correctional and mental health facilities that have licenses to operate around 12,491 beds. Out of this number, 24% -one in four authorized beds- that go unused. Shortage of health professionals, an exodus of those professionals to the United States, the new dimension of operational risks related to medical malpractice cases, the hike in operational costs, among others, are reasons for all these beds to go pretty much to waste.

May be a genetic disorder

The high incidence of deaf-mute people in Orocovis, rises the possibility that the condition is a genetic disorder. This municipality in the mountain zone of Puerto Rico has entire deaf-mute families, a lot of them with high levels of consanguinity. Geneticist Alberto Santiago Cornier, professor of the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine, assured that the probability of a genetic disorder is higher in those communities whose isolation promotes marriage among relatives.

Students from the Environmental Sciences Laboratory in the Metropolitan University of Puerto Rico are in charge of keeping aquaponic project. This projects aims to grow plants using organic fertilizers from the tilapia fish manure, and at the same time, the plants will serve as a filter so that those fertilizers do not concentrate in the water, harming the fishes.

Inventors' showcase

The First Forum of Inventors was a great opportunity to showcase the Puerto Rican creativity, gathering more than a hundred participants that included entrepreneurs, inventors, academics, and state functionaries, with the purpose of promoting the development of new ideas and educating about the resources available to support inventors. The inventors assisting the activity pointed out the importance that the government creates measures to support patenting and commercialization of inventions.
