With the UPR formula, that would give the University a 9.6% of the average Government’s income of the previous two years, stalled by the Legislature, the first educational institution of the country faces a possible crisis that would affect the academic offer, research, cultural programs, among other things.

The 2006 Summer Internship will consist of conferences, informal talks and interactive laboratory workshops. Researchers and graduate students from the Medical Sciences Campus, as well as science teachers will collaborate in these activities. In addition, the students will be able to c onverse with researchers and students from the six schools at the Medical Sciences Campus about career opportunities in the area of biomedical sciences

Dangerous political precedent that could affect research in UPR

Establishing a dangerous political precedent, this year, the House of Representatives chose to take $40 millions away form the UPR. Since 1966, to guarantee the UPR with fiscal autonomy from the political ups and downs and pressures, the UPR receives funding through a formula that, this year, equals 9.69% of the government revenues. However, this year the formula has been ignored, resulting in $40 million less for the main educational institution of the country. According to the Confederation of Associations of University Professors (CONAPU), this could affect research, among other things.

Vieques ecosystem threatened by undetonated, rusty US Navy bombs

After six decades of military practices in the island of Vieques, the US Navy left many undetonated bombs underwater around the shores of the Puerto Rican island. These bombs are now corroding and threaten the fragile ecosystem of the island.
