Due to the lack of planning, erosion, contamination, and resource exploitation, in combination with natural phenomena, future generations could not enjoy the beautiful coral reefs of the island of Culebrita, east of the main island of Puerto Rico.

The Center for Industrial Biotechnology Learning (CABI) of the University of Puerto Rico-Mayagüez (UPRM) recently won the 2006 Innovation prize presented by the Southern Growth Policies Board, an organization that promotes economical development in the Southern region of the United States, including Puerto Rico. CABI was selected out from 200 nominations, for developing an exemplary technological initiative.
