The phenomenon increased at an annual rate of 9.6% between 2011 and 2022.
Every week during the spring, when the sun sets, 30 students from the Astronomy class at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) in Cayey cross the campus carrying their telescopes and notebooks. They come to study the orbit of the planets and the properties of celestial bodies, but, increasingly, light pollution obstructs their view of the night sky.

CienciaPR partners with astronomy organizations to train educators in Puerto Rico

Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR), in collaboration with the Network for Astronomy School Education (NASE), the Puerto Rico Astronomy Society, and Dr. Wanda Díaz Merced of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), held a series of workshops from February 15-18, 2019. The purpose of these free courses was to train educators to promote the teaching and active learning of astronomy in schools, through models and observation of phenomena. The courses were held at the Metropolitan University in Bayamón, and were led by Dr. Beatriz García, vice president of NASE and Ángela Pérez. Thirty-two (32) Puerto Rican educators participated, in turn, they are expected to impact around 1000 students.

Astronomers identified, for the first time, the location of repetitive emissions called fast radio bursts (FRB) to a galaxy 2.5 billion years away. The Arecibo Observatory played a key role in identifying the location of these FRB.

The Victor M Blanco Fellowships were established by the National Society of Hispanic Physicists to encourage Hispanic students to pursue a degree in physics and astronomy. The program is a partnership between the Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO), the Fermi National Laboratory (Fermilab), and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Vanderbilt University.

Space rocks continue to be hard to detect when they are relatively small. An asteroid which size is estimated between 29 and 91 feet in diameter will pass close to Earth on Sunday, informed the Center of Asteroid Detection of the Astronomical International Union.
