The Cabo Rojo Salt Flats are among the most affected, and their restoration will begin in March.


Despite the importance of wetlands for humans and other species, these ecosystems - historically and erroneously considered wastelands - face threats from climate change and from the citizenry itself, with actions such as drainage and landfilling, compromising their vital functions.

The Caribbean Astronomical Society informed that there will be increased activity of Taurids meteors in the northern hemisphere on the nights of November 11-12, 2016.

Nature will never fully recover from the damage caused by an intentional fire on March 12, 2015 at the Boquerón State Forest in Cabo Rojo which consumed 30 acres covered by native species and trees, said Carmen Guerrero, Secretary of Natural and Environmental Resources.

Salt extracted from the Cabo Rojo salt from salt flats—the oldest industry in Puerto Rico—is highly pure and has great commercial value, thus making it an important source of income. But, did you know that the salt flats or salterns, as they are also known, are also a large-scalen oversized Microbiology laboratory?
