The new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine recognizes that racism has produced systemic barriers that limit full participation in science and medicine and offers concrete actions to break them down, thus promoting justice and inclusion. Puerto Rican scientist Dr. Giovanna Guerrero Medina, was chosen for her expertise and leadership as executive director of the organization Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR) to be a member of the committee that issued the document.

The disparity of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields is still a serious issue in 2016. Computer science, a STEM discipline, is not the exception. Data from the National Science Foundation show that although the number women acquiring computer science degrees has increased since 2002, women are still a small proportion of the workforce in this field which continues to be dominated by men.

Women in STEM: Progress, Asymptote, and Equality

Marvi Ann Matos's picture

In a speech to the United Nations, actress Emma Watson candidly expressed her perspective in regard to feminism, women rights, and gender equality. The speech, which called for action from men, women and the spectrum of genders, presented a realistic and somewhat grim picture of the current status of women’s rights around the world. Today, in United States we face very limited progress towards the inclusion of women in fields such as Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering. Presented in this article are specific statistics of women with degrees in Science and Engineering that illustrate an asymptote in progress in math-intensive fields. I conclude with ideas to inspire, integrate, and retain more women in Engineering, so that STEM may serve as a passport towards equality.
