What is hypothyroidism and how is it treated?

Before I started studying pharmacy, my mother used to tell me often that she did not feel quite right, she was always tired and had been recently gaining some weight without any apparent trigger or change in eating habits. It never occurred to me that these symptoms were the onset of hypothyroidism. After being diagnosed, my mother joined the number of people suffering from the thyroid, along with my grandmother and grandfather and many other Puerto Ricans.

The thyroid is a gland localized to the front part of your neck, under the "Adam's apple". Its function it to produce hormones that communicate to organs in our body affecting our breathing, cardiac rhythm, weight, an energy levels. If the thyroid is not working properly, neither can we.

I must confess that the first time I heard someone say that they were suffering from the thyroid, I figured "duhthiroy" was the name of a strange disease that I would not encounter often. It was not until much later that I understood the importance of the thyroid gland, whose role is vital to maintaining the balance in our bodies and therefore a sense of well-being. Thyroid diseases are even more common than diabetes, and yet, not much is heard about them. It is estimated that over 30 million Americans have thyroid problems, and that up to half of these have not yet been diagnosed.
