From heavy rains and hurricanes to prolonged droughts and extreme heat, the effects of climate change in Puerto Rico are becoming increasingly evident. For many, these alterations are of great concern, but there is still no study detailing their impact on the mental and emotional health of the island's population.

Faced with this reality, the organization Amigxs del M.A.R. launched “Enraizando ante la Crisis Climática,” a research project aimed at learning about the effects of environmental phenomena and government management on the thoughts, feelings and behavior of residents.

Response for students and STEM educators to the emergency of COVID-19

Greetchen Díaz-Muñoz's picture

Given the recent natural disasters and the public health emergency that we are facing, Ciencia Puerto Rico continues to be committed to the educators and students of Puerto Rico, who have seen their teaching and learning process interrupted, first by a sequence of earthquakes and now by the COVID-19 pandemic. This new crisis (the third in last three years) highlights how important it is to develop strategies and tools that ensure the continuity and resilience of the education system.

Ciencia al Servicio "Kit" for STEM educators

As part of its initiative for STEM educators in response to natural disasters, CienciaPR have designed a prototype of an "emergency kit"  for teachers containing accessible and reproducible educational material, with content aligned  to  the Department of Education' of Puerto Rico’s science and math standards (and with the ability to align to other subject standards)  for  elementary, intermediate and higher levels (regular and Montessori), along with guidelines for its implementation. Educational material can be used outside the traditional classroom and does not require the use of electrical power, and/or advanced technology. Materials in each "kit" can cover content for approximately 3-5 months.

Call for climate actions in Puerto Rico

Isabel Katsí Parés-Ramos's picture

Wallace Broecker, one of the first scientists to declare that polluting human actions caused climate change died recently. In 1975, Broecker embraced the term "global warming" in a publication for Science, where he showed that high carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the use of fossil fuels increase the Earth's temperature. Puerto Rico is vulnerable to global warming, associated with extreme droughts and intense hurricanes in the Caribbean region. This is one of the findings described by the local and international scientists in the Caribbean chapter of the Fourth National Climate Assessment (NCA4). Almost 50 years after Broecker warned about the need to mitigate global warming, climate change is not a topic that is given sufficient priority in the political scene in Puerto Rico. This must change.
