The community leaders of Puerto Rico are an essential fiber of our country. They constitute an important network of support and security for countless individuals, especially those who are vulnerable and marginalized, in the face of disasters, everyday crises, and institutional failures. They are like the tabonuco, a native tree of Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles, with great historical, social, and cultural significance.

The mission of the office is to encourage and assist Stanford faculty members and graduate students to engage in "science outreach" programs, i.e., programs and activities that will promote interest and proficiency in science, technology, engineering and mathematical (STEM) fields among pre-collegiate students, teachers, and the general public, in ways that help fulfill the Broader Impacts criterion of federal funders.
The Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) aims to develop well-rounded scientific leaders and professionals. Completing a science outreach project is one aspect of the program that helps fellows advance towards this goal. The 2017 class of YCA Fellows led and implemented a series of science outreach projects to put into practice the communication, teaching and leadership skills they learned during their year in the program. The projects included various podcasts, a full-day symposium on deaf mental health, and a new blog in a major Spanish-language newspaper.
