During the 2015 SACNAS National Conference, Drs. Mónica I. Feliú-Mójer and Yaihara Fortis-Santiago from Ciencia Puerto Rico took part in this workshop offering tips and advice on how you can support your career advancement by cultivating a professional and personal network by identifying advisors, mentors and sponsors. Presented at the 2015 SACNAS National Conference by Drs. Mary García-Cazarín, Yaihara Fortis-Santiago, Kermin Martínez-Hernández, Nahyr Rovira-Figueroa, and Mónica Feliú-Mójer. 

#SACNAS2015: How Social Identity Influences Interest and Persistence in STEM

Social identity, or the intersection between race/ethnicity and gender identity, strongly influences women and underrepresented minority (URM) students’ interest and persistence in STEM. CienciaPR Team members Dr. Mónica I. Feliú-Mójer and Dr. Yaihara Fortis-Santiago co-organized and co-chaired this session at the 2015 SACNAS Conference to discuss recent research findings as well as strategies that may help promote congruence between social and scientific identity. Presenters included Dr. Paul Hernandez from West Virginia University, Dr. Kenny Gibbs, Jr. from the National Cancer Institute and our own Dr. Giovanna Guerrero-Medina, Executive Director of Ciencia Puerto Rico and Director of the Yale Ciencia Intitiave.

First, a reflection:

Access to science opportunities—to the privilege and power of science—is not equitable nor equal. This was my truth—and that of many people I know—growing up. I didn't have much access to role models, to programs, to information. I didn't know I could be a scientist. Once I became a scientist I made it my mission to leverage my knowledge and privilege to make science accessible to people like me.

Led by UNH biogeochemical oceanographer Joe Salisbury, a group of 15 scientists is currently aboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration research vessel Gordon Gunter on a two-leg, 34-day expedition that will help determine how humans are causing changes in the oxygen and carbon dioxide content of oceans, leading to the global acidification of seawater.

Una confusión al momento de escoger dónde cursaría estudios graduados, le dio un giro de 180 grados a la vida profesional de la científica Maricarmen García De la Vega.

La década de 1980 iba a medias y García De la Vega recién completaba su bachillerato en microbiología en la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR), recinto de Río Piedras. Estudió tecnología médica en el recinto de Ciencias Médicas de la UPR y trabajó en varios laboratorios de hospitales; confirmó que le apasionaba la microbiología, especialmente la microbiología clínica (en humanos).
