Committed to his country and his alma mater, the engineer José M. Rodríguez, a graduate of the Mayagüez University Campus (RUM), of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), is a flagship plant in his work as Director of Engineering for the Americas in Abbott Laboratories company, where it is a leader of vital initiatives today to combat COVID-19.

El equipo UPRM RoboBoat Team, compuesto por 35 estudiantes de diversas disciplinas del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM), de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR), diseñó, manufacturó y programó un bote autónomo, que se bautizó con el nombre de RUM-BA, capaz de navegar con una serie de obstáculos acuáticos, para la participación del International RoboBoat Competition, que tendría lugar en South Daytona, en Florida, pero que se realizó de manera virtual.

Catedrático del RUM de la Universidad dePuerto Rico recibe dos premiaciones por sus aportaciones en la Ingeniería Civil y Transportación

El doctor Benjamín Colucci Ríos, catedrático del Departamento de Ingeniería Civil y Agrimensura (INCI), del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR), recibió la más alta distinción por parte de la Asociación Americana de Ingenieros Civiles (ASCE). Además, se convirtió en el primer hispano en obtener el Premio Internacional Wilbur S. Smith.

Se trata del ascenso al rango máximo de fellow de la ASCE, concedida por sus propios colegas del campo de la Ingeniería Civil. La gala Opal, en la que se le concedió el honor, tuvo lugar en Washington, D.C., previo a los acontecimientos actuales, donde se rindió tributo a los ingenieros civiles que fueron exaltados.

New Fortress Energy Awards Scholarships to Polytechnic University Students

New Fortress Energy awarded important scholarships to four engineering students of the Polytechnic University to continue their studies. Students Bryan A. González Nieves, Gustavo J. Albelo Rivera, Josué E. Ortíz Acevedo and Angelica C. Soto Pomales will each be recipients of a $5,000 scholarship for their academic expenses.

Students were chosen to meet a series of criteria, among which were: academic index of 3.0 or more, demonstrate financial need, demonstrate participation in community and leadership activities. In addition, to opt for such financial assistance, they had to be students of electrical, mechanical or civil engineering at the undergraduate level.

El ingenio y la audacia colegial relucieron en Egipto con el desempeño de la estudiante de Ingeniería de Computadoras, Jahannie Torres Rodríguez, quien consiguió representar al Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR) en el Congreso Mundial International Council for Small Business (ICSB) 2019, con la distinción de conquistar dos sobresalientes premios: mejor artículo científico en la categoría de América del Norte y del Sur, así como un primer lugar en la competencia de pitch o lanzamiento de una idea empresarial.

Professor Ingrid Montes González of the Natural Sciences Faculty of the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras (UPR-RRP), will be recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS). She has received the Zaida C. Morales-Martínez Award in recognition for her outstanding mentoring of ACS students.

Puerto Rican students win first place in NASA competition

Students from the Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas de Mayagüez (CROEM; a specialized STEM school in Puerto Rico) won first place in the “Veggies in Space o NASA Growing Beyond Earth (GBE)” competition sponsored by NASA.

Dr. Jorge L. Colón Rivera, professor at the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras campus has been inducted ‘Fellow of the Royal Society’ of the United Kingdom, a high honor bestowed by the recommendation of colleagues who already belong to the organization.
