Puerto Rican students win first place in NASA competition

Students from the Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas de Mayagüez (CROEM; a specialized STEM school in Puerto Rico) won first place in the “Veggies in Space o NASA Growing Beyond Earth (GBE)” competition sponsored by NASA.

UPR Professor named ‘Fellow of the Royal Society’

Dr. Jorge L. Colón Rivera, professor at the University of Puerto Rico Río Piedras campus has been inducted ‘Fellow of the Royal Society’ of the United Kingdom, a high honor bestowed by the recommendation of colleagues who already belong to the organization. 

UPR Mayaguez students will participate for the first time in SAE Aero Design competition

Puerto Rican students receive awards at the largest conference for undergraduates in biomedical sciences

Thirteen students from the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras received awards at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in Indiana. The students who were recognized are:

Three students from the Polytechnic University of Puerto Rico obtained second place in the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference's (HENAAC) hackathon, sponsored by the Computing Alliance of Hispanic Serving Institutions (CAHSI). The evnt was held in Pasadena en California.

First Puerto Rican woman to be named president of Mycological Society of America

Dr. Sharon A. Cantrell became the first Puerto Rican woman to be appointed to the presidency of the Mycologycal Society of America, an organization that brings together scientists dedicated to the study of fungi and which was founded in 1932. Dr. Cantrell is a professor at the School of Natural Sciences and Technology of the Universidad del Turabo in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. She obtained her baccalaureate (Biology) and masters (Biology / Mycology) at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. In 1996 she completed his PhD in Phytopathology - Mycology at the University of Georgia in Athens. Currently her research is directed to fungal ecology, climate change, extreme environments, taxonomy and systematics.

Student from the University of Puerto Rico Bayamón named Intern of the Week by NASA

Allan Fret, a computer science student at the University of Puerto Rico in Bayamón was recognized by NASA as Intern of the Week for his outstanding work during a summer program at the Johnson Space Center.

Puerto Rican Scientist among Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellows

Jennifer Gil, a Puerto Rican environmental scientist is one of the 2018-2019 Fulbright-National Geographic Digital Storytelling Fellows. She will travel to Panama to collect microalgae samples, documenting her findings for the world in both Spanish and English through blogging, microscopic pictures and video. Jennifer studied interdisciplinary science at the University of Puerto Rico and recently completed her master’s in environmental science at Florida International University.

Scientists from Puerto Rico Participate in Prestigious Leadership Training to Increase STEM Leaders of Color
