RUM professor receives grant from NSF for research in experimental particle physics

Dr. Sudhir Malik, professor of the Physics Department of the Mayagüez Campus (RUM), received a grant of $ 375 thousand from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the project called Physics beyond the Standard Model with the pixel detector CMS, which will allow you to continue your collaboration in the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, which is carried out at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the largest and most powerful particle accelerator in the world, located in the European Laboratory of Particle Physics (CERN) on the Franco-Swiss border, near Geneva.

NSF awards grant to improve the resilience of energy systems in disasters

The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a grant of $ 300 thousand to doctors Nayda G. Santiago Santiago, professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Mayagüez Campus (RUM) and Yuanrui Sang, from the University of Texas, in El Paso (UTEP), for a project that seeks to develop a distributed decision-making mechanism during natural disasters to improve the resilience of energy systems. The professors, along with a group of students from both institutions, would use the technology called blockchain, to measure the status of an electrical network.

El equipo UPRM RoboBoat Team, compuesto por 35 estudiantes de diversas disciplinas del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM), de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR), diseñó, manufacturó y programó un bote autónomo, que se bautizó con el nombre de RUM-BA, capaz de navegar con una serie de obstáculos acuáticos, para la participación del International RoboBoat Competition, que tendría lugar en South Daytona, en Florida, pero que se realizó de manera virtual.

Catedrático del RUM de la Universidad dePuerto Rico recibe dos premiaciones por sus aportaciones en la Ingeniería Civil y Transportación

El doctor Benjamín Colucci Ríos, catedrático del Departamento de Ingeniería Civil y Agrimensura (INCI), del Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR), recibió la más alta distinción por parte de la Asociación Americana de Ingenieros Civiles (ASCE). Además, se convirtió en el primer hispano en obtener el Premio Internacional Wilbur S. Smith.

Se trata del ascenso al rango máximo de fellow de la ASCE, concedida por sus propios colegas del campo de la Ingeniería Civil. La gala Opal, en la que se le concedió el honor, tuvo lugar en Washington, D.C., previo a los acontecimientos actuales, donde se rindió tributo a los ingenieros civiles que fueron exaltados.

El ingenio y la audacia colegial relucieron en Egipto con el desempeño de la estudiante de Ingeniería de Computadoras, Jahannie Torres Rodríguez, quien consiguió representar al Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez (RUM) de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR) en el Congreso Mundial International Council for Small Business (ICSB) 2019, con la distinción de conquistar dos sobresalientes premios: mejor artículo científico en la categoría de América del Norte y del Sur, así como un primer lugar en la competencia de pitch o lanzamiento de una idea empresarial.

CienciaPR partners with astronomy organizations to train educators in Puerto Rico

Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR), in collaboration with the Network for Astronomy School Education (NASE), the Puerto Rico Astronomy Society, and Dr. Wanda Díaz Merced of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), held a series of workshops from February 15-18, 2019. The purpose of these free courses was to train educators to promote the teaching and active learning of astronomy in schools, through models and observation of phenomena. The courses were held at the Metropolitan University in Bayamón, and were led by Dr. Beatriz García, vice president of NASE and Ángela Pérez. Thirty-two (32) Puerto Rican educators participated, in turn, they are expected to impact around 1000 students.

Scientists from Puerto Rico Participate in Prestigious Leadership Training to Increase STEM Leaders of Color

This week, a new generation of underrepresented minority STEM leaders are being trained to serve, strengthen, and unify communities at the local and national level. They are learning tools to lead institutional transformation and help build a critical mass of STEM professionals and leaders from underrepresented communities. Ciencia Puerto Rico is represented.

Aixa Aleman-Díaz, Rosa Leon-Zayas, Elizabeth Padilla-Crespo, from Puerto Rico, and other outstanding scientific leaders who are participating in the 2018 Linton-Poodry SACNAS led by Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics & Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), developed in partnership with the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS).

EarthEcho International, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to equipping youth with resources to act now for a sustainable future, has selected Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico student Nashalie Irizarry as one of 20 young environmental leaders from across the United States who will help tackle the global water crisis starting in their local communities. As part of the inaugural EarthEcho Water Challenge Ambassadors initiative, Nashalie Irizarry will increase knowledge of local water resources throughout  the Municipality of Ponce by monitoring local water quality and engaging their peers in water quality monitoring and conservation events.
