Dr. Mónica I. Feliú-Mójer, Vice-Director for Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR) and Science Outreach Program Manager for iBiology, has been selected to receive the 2016 Inspiring Women in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

This award honors women who work to make a difference in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Dr. Feliú-Mójer will be featured, along with 64 other recipients, in the September 2016 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the largest and oldest diversity and inclusion publication in higher education.

The Astronomy Society of Puerto Rico invites the general public to their monthly conference this next Wednesday, August 17 from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Planetarium in the Parque de Las Ciencias at Bayamon. The conference titled: "Asteroids close to Planet Earth" will be in charge of Dr. Desiree Cotto Figueroa, Assistant Professor of the Department of Physics and Electronics at the University of Puerto Rico - Humacao Campus.

A recent study from the Global Footprint Network concluded that if global consumption continues at the current rate, we would need 1.6 planets Earth to satisfy the demands of humanity. Specifically, Puerto Rico would need a territorial extension 26 times its size in order to harvest the food needed to support its population and to be assimilate the contaminants generated by the 3.5 million inhabitants.

El exceso de luz artificial o contaminación lumínica que sufre Puerto Rico afecta a especies animales como tortugas y aves, aunque es un problema del que tampoco se libra la población de la isla caribeña.

El director ejecutivo de la Junta de Calidad Ambiental (JCA), Weldin Ortiz, señaló hoy a Efe que ante el problema de contaminación lumínica en la Isla su agencia apuesta por la educación. Las expresiones de Ortiz fueron durante la inauguración del Tercer foro sobre prevención y control de la contaminación lumínica en Puerto Rico.

The rapid dissemination of zika virus in Puerto Rico, is one of the biggest concerns for Vivek H. Murthy, the Surgeon General of the United States of America, and the main reason for his visit to Puerto Rico this week. Dr. Murthy emphasized the importance of collectively fighting the virus by taking preventive measures.

850,000 people are projected to become infected with zika virus by the end of this year, representing a fourth of Puerto Rico's population and surpassing the initial projections anticipated by the CDC.
