Puerto Rico wins bronze at the International Mathematical Olympiad

Francisco Proskauer Valerio won the bronze metal at the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad. The competition was held in Hong Kong and more than 100 countries participated.

The Computational Science Department from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the Univeristy of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus held the first Cyber Security Summer Camp for high school students. The camp focused on introducing participants to areas of cyber security, holding informative workshops and by providing pratical experiencies through the use of tools used by experts in security.

Factors that influence bioluminescence were measured and observed at the Puerto Mosquito Bay in Vieques and in St. Croix. Results show that luminous pollutions influences bioiluminescence in two ways, by inhibiting the bioluminescence of the dinoflagelates and by skewing the perceived luminosity of the observed bioluminescence.

Seven high school students participated in a four week long summer research experience the Nanotechnology Center at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. During the program the students participated in workshops with topics such as laboratory safety, search of scientific literature, Excel use, etc. The camp ended with a research poster competition where students were able to communicate their research experience and learn from peers.

San Juan - The Arecibo Observatory is recruiting students from 9th-12th grade to particpate in an intensive research program next semester. The program will last ten saturdays and will focus on designing and developing a research project related to planetary sciences and the habitability of humans in space.
