Codifi-K: Free Virtual Experience of Computer Science

The event will guide boys and girls from kindergarten to fifth grade to code with their family.

San Juan, Puerto Rico. December 15, 2020 - On December 17 and 18 at 6:30 pm, the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust and the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA) will offer a virtual event called Codifi-K: Family Code Night. This experience is for families of all primary schools in Puerto Rico to explore games, platforms, and other resources with their children through a free online computer learning. The event will be facilitated by teachers leading the Computer Science education in Puerto Rico.

“The Family Code Night arises in collaboration with the Computer Science Teachers Association with the aim of innovating and involving the school communities in the educational process”, expressed Jorge Valentine, director of the STEM educational program of the Trust. “For us, the accessibility to education is important for every boy and girl on the island. For this reason, the event will be free, in Spanish and available on mobile phones, tablets and computers," he concluded.

Coding is defined as assigning a value of symbols or characters to a message for the purpose of transmitting it to other individuals or entities that share the code. We transform daily visual images into text, and we communicate them to those around us. In computing, coding consists of sending data from one place to another, processing it and obtaining results from them.

To participate in the evening experience, the K-5 school must register and then distribute the invitation and link to families in their school community. "At the end of registration, directors will receive an invitation to share with the school community. Those interested may participate in one of the two live sessions of the event on December 17 or 18 at 6:30 pm. We invite you to be part of this free virtual computing experience offered by professionals”, said Valentine
