The United States Coral Reef Task Force (USCRTF) and Para la Naturaleza, a new unti in the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico are pleased to announce the 9th Annual Governor Tauese P.F. Sunia Memorial Coral Reef Conservation Summer Internship for the Caribbean Area.
This internship is in recognition of the late Governor’s outstanding leadership and contribution to the conservation of U.S. coral reef ecosystems. The late Governor Sunia is most remembered for being an eloquent and impassioned advocate for coral reef protection and management at the local level, not only in American Samoa, but throughout the U.S. and the Pacific region. This summer internship continues the Governor’s legacy by providing an outstanding college or
university student a unique opportunity to gain valuable, professionally formative experience in conservation of coral reef ecosystem, while also contributing to the overall efforts of the hosting organization Para la Naturaleza and the USCRTF Initiatives in the Caribbean area. It provides an 8-10 week summer internship for an eligible student (see eligibility information below) interested in natural resource management and coral reef ecosystems. The program is designed to provide the selected student with career-enhancing experience through work contributing to the Guánica Bay / Rio Loco Watershed Partnership. The students will be involved with productive, hands-on job assignments in watershed management and natural resources conservation and enhancement as they relate to watershed management for coastal ecosystems and initiatives in the Caribbean area. The selected students must be willing to work on a full-time schedule during the summer break.
Location: Caribbean Area-Puerto Rico The selected students will work within the municipalities of Lajas, Guanica, Yauco and Cabo Rojo, those municipalities that cover the Río Loco watershed. Office hours will be at U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service facilities (Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuge) and at Hacienda
Buena Vista, Ponce.

What the Internship provides:
The internship allows temporary appointment of students for 8-10 weeks. Positions can be filled in the areas of natural resource and watershed management with emphasis on habitat restoration, soil conservation, outreach and education, and coral reef conservation.

Who is Eligible?
A student enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a degree-seeking student in an
accredited technical or vocational school, 2 – year or 4 – Year College or university, or graduate or professional school.
Is at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen.
Taking at least a half-time course load as determined by the academic institution.
Requirements:
Minimum 3.00 GPA (cumulative)
Bilingual (Fluent in Spanish and English)
Students must have knowledge in coastal ecosystem, habitat restoration, wildlife
management, and biodiversity assessments. Experience and/or Course on Geographic Information Systems is preferable.

Pay and Qualification Requirements:
$12.19 per hour

• A 750 word essay (maximum) on the importance of managing watersheds to improve coral reefs in your island jurisdiction and nationally; and how this internship will benefit your career goals related to coral reef management.
