Society for Science & the Public (SSP) Position Description – SSP Communications Coordinator Background: Founded in 1921, Society for Science & the Public (SSP) is a non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization in Washington, D.C. whose mission is to promote the understanding and appreciation of science and the vital role it plays in human advancement. SSP publishes the award-winning Science News, and Science News for Kids. We also offer outstanding education programs for students:  Intel Science Talent Search (STS)  Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) and  The SSP Middle School Program (MSP); SSP programs and publications are supported by new membership and outreach initiatives launched in 2009. Communications Coordinator The Communications Coordinator is a new position responsible for authoring, editing, and/or publishing content for SSP print and web communications. This individual will act as liaison to SSP programming including education, outreach, alumni and membership programs, as well as managing content development for the online publication Science News for Kids. Primary Responsibilities Core duties include: 1. Creating, editing, and overseeing distribution of a new SSP alumni & member publication (online or print). This may include writing alumni profiles, reporting on SSP educational programs, and integrating Science News content and other materials. 2. Serving as lead writer and content manager for all SSP educational program materials. 3. Coordinating SSP website content, including maintaining timeliness of existing material and proactively planning and developing new content 4. Maintaining the Science News for Kids website on the SSP site as an educational resource and coordinating content updates with key Science News staff. 5. Working to better integrate the content of Science News and Science News for Kids into classrooms and school curriculum. 6. Maximizing exposure for SSP and its programs and publications through social media channels. Qualifications 1. Undergraduate degree required. Major in communication, journalism, science or education is preferred. 2. At least 3 years of experience in communications position, preferably with a non- profit organization with a membership, alumni/education, and/or outreach component. 3. Outstanding communication skills. 4. Technical proficiency including: a. Adobe creative suite (InDesign, Photoshop, etc.) b. Website Content Management System c. Microsoft office suite, including Excel d. Practical knowledge and proficiency with social media sites 5. Demonstrated ability to work with others as a team. 6. Attendance at all SSP educational programs, typically requiring at least 2 weeks of travel annually. 7. Affinity for the educational and science goals of SSP.
