A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Sabzali Javadov, Department of Physiology at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine to conduct NIH-funded research on the role of mitochondria in the progression of heart failure. Our Lab elucidates the role of mitochondrial permeability transition in mitochondrial fragmentation induced by oxidative stress in ischemia/reperfusion and heart failure. The laboratory takes an integrative approach by utilizing an in vitro cell culture system, an ex vivo isolated heart perfusion preparation, and an in vivo post-myocardial infarction rat model. Currently, the Lab is focused on the regulation of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore by signaling pathways involved in energy metabolism during ischemia/reperfusion and heart failure.

The selected candidate will investigate translocation of proteins to mitochondria, protein-protein interaction, post-translational modification of mitochondrial proteins, a loss of membrane potential, PTP induction and mitochondrial fragmentation with progression of post-infarction remodeling to heart failure. In addition, the postdoctoral researcher will investigate a relationship between mitochondrial abnormalities and cardiac function in cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in the biological sciences, and prior experience in cardiac physiology, mitochondria, cell isolation/culture, biochemistry, and molecular/cellular biology including the use of adenovirus or siRNA and advanced cell imaging techniques. Salary and benefits are commensurate with experience.

Applications including cover letter, curriculum vitae and the names and contact information of 3 references must be submitted via e-mail to Dr. Sabzali Javadov (sabzali.javadov@upr.edu).

The University of Puerto Rico is an equal opportunity employer.
