Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes at Arizona State University

Washington DC Center

June 21 – 30, 2015

The Consortium for Science, Policy & Outcomes at Arizona State University is seeking applicants for the new international Science Outside the Lab Science Diplomacy & Leadership Program that will take place from June 21 to 30, 2015 in Washington DC.

What is it?

This first-of-its-kind course will expose early career scientists and engineers from Latin America and the Caribbean to key transnational and regional challenges and opportunities related to science, technology, environment and health in the Americas. The course is designed as an immersion experience combining academic lectures, field visits, professional development workshops, networking opportunities and leadership training. Participants will develop a broad set of skills and practical tools to work across borders, cultures and disciplines to understand and address emerging societal challenges and become agents of change in their countries and in the region as a whole.

What to expect?

The program is divided in three modules:

  • Academic module: includes lectures by Arizona State University faculty and inspiring US and Latin American speakers on the key thematic areas of science diplomacy — i.e., energy, environment, climate, water, global health, space exploration –, as well as visits to embassies, federal agencies, non-profits, multilateral bodies and think tanks focused on regional engagement with Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Leadership module: training in communication, teamwork, cross-cultural awareness, innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • Networking: participants will join a growing inter-American network of young leaders and innovators reaching across borders to positively impact the future of the region beyond the duration of the program.

Who should attend?

Applications are invited from early career scientists and engineers from Latin America and the Caribbean seeking to broaden their scientific and technical training to have a positive impact on their countries and on the region as a whole.

How much does it cost?

$4,500 includes tuition, all activities and materials, shared lodging for 9 nights at George Washington University dorms, all breakfasts and lunches, and local transportation. Participants are responsible for their own travel and visa arrangements to Washington DC.
$3,500 without lodging and breakfast.
