Rustbelt Investigators for the Next Generation (RING) provides undergraduate and master's students from the University of Puerto Rico system an outstanding opportunity for HIV/AIDS research training at either Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) or the University of Pittsburgh between the months of May and September.

The RING program covers research, travel, and living expenses. Participants will engage in an intensive 10-week summer program designed to provide hands-on experience in research, together with guidance on how to plan for a research-related career. Students will receive individualized mentoring and participate in weekly seminars, lab meetings, and community events. The program serves as a stepping stone for students to advance to PhD or clinical training in HIV/AIDS, Each trainee will work with a professor who shares similar research interests.

There is also the Rustbelt CFAR Postbac Research Education Program (PREP) for students from Puerto Rico interested in bridging the gap between an undergraduate degree and graduate school through a paid, 1-year research experience. PREP students receive professional guidance and focused support for the PhD or MD/PhD application process and they can enroll in graduate coursework free of charge.

To Apply, you'll need to:

  • Attend an orientation seminar at UPR Mayaguez (Feb 3), UPR-Cayey (Feb 4), UPR-Rio Piedras (Feb5) or UPR-Humacao (Feb 6)
  • Or dontact directly Dr. Alan Levin (alan.levine@case.edu) or Dr. Nicolas Sluis-Cremer (nps2@pitt.edu)
  • Everyone who is interested in either program will receive an interview, either in person or by Zoom
