A dengue vaccine?

In the middle of a dengue epidemic that has affected thousands of people in Puerto Rico, GlaxoSmithKline and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research are doing clinical trials in Puerto Rico for a vaccine that, if successful, has the potential of eradicating this disease in the next couple of years. The vaccine would be the first against a disease that affects millions around the world and that last week reached epidemic levels in Puerto Rico.

Amgen to cut jobs

Amgen, the world’s biggest biotechnology company, will cut up to 2,600 jobs, but it is still unknown if their plans will affect Puerto Rico, where the company has around 2,300 employees. Amgen will reduce between 12% and 14% of its workforce and said that it will cut expenses down to $1,900 million this year.

Area proposed for the eolic park is ecologically sensitive

The development of an eolic park in Guayanilla, as proposed by the company Windmar, will disrupt the ecosystems of Punta Ventana and Punta Varraco, causing “irreparable” damage to these areas that are part of the Guanica Dry Forest, warned biologist Miguel Canals.

Fight for a wetland in Ponce

Unscrupulous citizens burned and abandoned an SUV in the wetland of the Las Salinas lagoon in Ponce, disdaining the efforts of the community to clean the zone of high-ecologic value. The spokesperson for the group Friends of the Lagoon asked for more personnel to be assigned to the area, where a second phase of cleaning will start August 25, together with personnel from the municipality. Neighbors want the authorities to avoid that the lagoon and surrounding areas to become an illegal garbage dump again, where a few months ago used to be dozens of abandoned cars, tires and other debris.

Frank H. Wadsworth, forestry expert, said in public hearings that choosing Guayanilla for an eolic park to generate energy was not accurate because there are other places in the country with more wind flow. The expert said that the proposal “seems to be more focused on the investment than in the generation of energy”. He added that they “didn’t use the official data about wind in Puerto Rico” to choose the place.

An analysis of the urban land use tendencies that were gathered by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, has predicted that the developed land in the coastal zones in Puerto Rico will duplicate and will reach a 44% of the total land. Between 1977 and 1999 there was a 99.5% increase in the use of the northeastern coast, followed by the southern coast, with a 66.8% growth.

The Coastal Barrier Resource Act of 1982 (COBRA) prohibits the purchase of federal insurances for flooding on properties built o renovated after their construction date, that are located in areas susceptible to coastal flooding.
