Coffee berry borer threatens Puerto Rico's coffee industry

The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) is an insect that feeds on coffee, the only plant where there is evidence that it can complete its life cycle. This insect eats and lives in the coffee berries. Although this plague affects coffee crops around the world, Puerto Rico had been able to dodge the ball until recently. It is known that worldwide the plague has been controlled successfully using integrated control plans together with biological control.

Puerto Rico has started living the first steps towards creating its own industry for the main biofuel in the world: ethanol. Ethanol is an alcohol that can be produced through the fermentation of the juices of certain crops, like sugar cane, corn, and wheat, and can be used as fuel for cars in its pure form or -more commonly, in a 10% to 30% mix with gasoline- gasohol, to reduce the consumption of petroleum-derived fuels, and generate a mix that is more eco-friendly.

Alert due to brain-eating amoeba

Although there is a remote possibility that Puerto Rico will register cases related to an amoeba that feeds on brain tissue, the State’s epidemiologist, Enid García Rivera, exhorted health professionals to be aware of the situation and be careful with diagnoses. The microorganism, know as Naegleria fowleri, has caused six deaths so far in the United States, in Florida, Texas and Arizona. Between 1995 and 2004 it caused 23 deaths in the US.
