Since 2005, the Plant Disease and Plague Diagnostic Clinic, part of Agricultural Extension in Juan Diaz has been operating and currently has 90 samples under study. There farmers can go for help with the signs and symptoms of their sick crops.

In a conference at the Metropolitan University, William Harris, a scientist that was key in the development of Ireland's economic model for a few years, emphaszed on four steps to compete in the new global economy: 1. Make scientific and technological education a center piece 2. Support research and developmet, to turn into knowledge and innovation. 3. Create the proper environment where the best ideas can compete and be granted money and awarded for their quality. 4. Link the university system with public schools, grades k to 12, to assure a world class academic development.

Students from nine high schools in San Lorenzo, Caguas, Cidra, Bayamón and Cayey, were selected to participate in the “Coquitron Transformed #1144” project, for their interest in science and mathematics. The Puerto Rican team will compete against 1,500 teams and 37,500 students from high schools in the Uited States and other countries. The competition tica was created by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), a non-profit entity created to foster interest in science and technology in students.
