The Department of Health and several pediatric medical organizations clarified that all vaccines currently administered to children do not contain the preservative thimerosal, a mercury derivative. Most adult vaccines, except a few against the flu and rabies also do not carry thimerosal. This preservative was removed from vaccines in 2001, as a preventive measure before its safety could be confirmed. Since then, several studies have shown no proof to link thimerosal to neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's or autism.
