UPR budget cut

The University of Puerto Rico faces a budget cut, because the Government decided to stop a formula that would have given the institution a $37 million increase in next year's budget. Establishing a dangerous political precedent, this year, the House of Representatives chose to take $40 millions away form the UPR. Since 1966, to guarantee the UPR with fiscal autonomy from the political ups and downs and pressures, the UPR receives funding through a formula that, this year, equals 9.69% of the government revenues. However, this year the formula has been ignored, resulting in $40 million less for the main educational institution of the country. According to the Confederation of Associations of University Professors (CONAPU), this could affect research, among other things.
