The Merck Production System (MPS) team from Arecibo, Puerto Rico shared Pharmaceutical Manufacturing’s 2006 Team of the Year Gold Award with a group from Wyeth in Pearl River, N.Y. The MPS Arecibo team was hailed by the jury for "its role in piloting a manufacturing system that is to be rolled out at Merck facilities worldwide. The team engineered major reductions in cycle times, changeover times and inventory, all the while demonstrating uncommon morale, togetherness and sense of purpose."

New drug to treat invasive breast cancer

Initial results of an investigation conducted by the Oncological Hospital and the San Juan Community Clinical Program of Puerto Rico’s capital, "revealed that a drug, until now used to prevent osteoporosis, could reduce the incidence of invasive breast cancer in women in 50%."
