This August, our Ciencia Puerto Rico team welcomed two new members: Dayanna N. Seguí Moró, Benjamin (Ben) Runyon and Kevin Rubén Lebrón. Dayanna is the new Coordinator of L’Oreal For Girls In Science-Puerto Rico, where she will contribute to the development of skills in young Puerto Rican girls and help them become mentors for other girls in our Seeds Of Success program.

Forest fires, torrential rains, droughts and extreme heat affect the countries that supply the archipelago, forcing an increase in local production, according to experts.

 

On an island that imports 85% of what it consumes, seeing the shelves full of products in supermarkets, despite the fact that the last natural disaster was a year ago with Hurricane Fiona, does not hide an irrefutable fact: Puerto Rico is at the mercy of the ravages of climate change in the countries that supply it with food, agreed multiple voices consulted by El Nuevo Día.

Although these tiny particles continue to contribute to the water pollution problem, local researchers are exploring new solutions.


"These are everyday sights in Puerto Rico today," said Jorge Bauzá, pointing to photos of piles of plastic bottles, garbage bags and foam coolers piled up on idyllic beaches.

"We still have a long way to go to change this plastic culture," emphasized the oceanographer and scientific director of the San Juan Bay Estuary Program, during the annual conference of the Puerto Rico College of Chemists -PR Chem- held recently.

El Nuevo Día

The collaborations that Dr. Elizabeth Padilla Crespo formed with researchers from the federal Department of Agriculture will allow her to take her work "to the next level".
A research professor from the Aguadilla campus of the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico was the only Puerto Rican chosen, along with seven other U.S. researchers, by the federal Department of Agriculture (USDA) to participate as a Science Fellow in the 2023 Kika de la Garza Fellowship Program.

Congratulations to our Executive Director, Dr. Giovanna Guerrero-Medina, on her selection to the Empowering Career Pathways Multidisciplinary Committee of the prestigious scientific organization AAAS. Reporting to the organization's leadership, the committee will develop practical tools and recommendations to break down barriers to entry into STEM careers and improve talent retention.
