The Environmental Research laboratory, inaugurated in Rio Piedras as part of the Science City project, will serve as the principal laboratory for the Puerto Rico Environmental Quality Board.

Lucy Crespo, the Principal Executive Oficcer from the Science, Technology and Innovation Fund, announced that the construction of the Laboratory Road, principal acces road to the "Ciudad de las Ciencias", will begin today. "La Ciudad de las Ciencias" or City of Science will be composed of research and techonology structures that will help place Puerto Rico at the competetivie level of excellence within the economy of global knowledge.

The Science City is a project that has been in the conceptualization stages for over six years. From its conception the project had the Rio Piedras Penintentiary builiding, known as Oso Blanco, as a centerpiece. This historical building was to be remodeled into laboratory and start-up space. However, how to proceed with the remodelation and preservation of this historic building has hit a snag and recently the demolition of the building has been proposed.

 

In this article, architect Emmanuel Ramírez discussess alternatives to the demolition of historical Oso Blanco.

The Puerto Rico Science andTechnology Trust is under a reorganization and some work is on pause while an analysis of the programs and finances of the institution is carried out.  Also pending are some legal litigations and naming new fiduciaries to the general council, preferably those of high academic and and entrepreneurial status.  Six private sector seats are still empty.  The vision for the Trust is that government only acts as a facilitator.
