Infotech Aerospace Services (IAS) donated $115,000 for the creation of a new Aerospace Center at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez Campus. These new faccilities will include classrooms and laboratories dedicated for education in mechanical engineering and aerospace research.

One of the New Faces of Engineering at the international level is from UPR-Mayaguez. Yazeli Elizabeth Cruz Rivera, a first year graduate student in the Industrial Engineering Graduate Program was selected as one of the New Faces of Engineering 2016.

Student team from RUM wins regional competition of the American Society of Civil Engineers

The group of students from the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez Campus that represented Puerto Rico in the southern regional competitions of the American Society of Civil Engineers, won the majority of the awards, including the prestigious Overall for the concrete canoe and steel bridge. This achievement classified them to move to the national competition where they will represent the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Puerto Rico in may and june of this year.

Dr. Marvi Matos, Director of Chemical Technologies, Metals and Ceramics for Boeing Research and Technology at the Boeing Company, CienciaPR volunteer and Borinqueña was named the most promising engineer with an advanced degree (PhD) by the organization Great Minds in STEM.

Engineering is often perceived as a utilitarian discipline where innovation is only for commercial purposes. However, many engineers work on solving problems of social and environmental importance. This is the case of Dr. Luciano Castillo, Professor of Engineering at Texas Tech University who has devoted his life—and hundreds of publications and various inventions—to improve the production of eco-sustainable energy sources through developing fundamental research in wind energy.

The University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez (RUM) signed a memorandum of understading with Ahkeo Holdings LCC,  a group of enterprises with offices in Puerto Rico, focused in the development of energy high efficiency technologies. The MOU will establish the first laboratory in micronetworks in Puerto Rico.

Borinqueña Global: A Conversation with Dr. Dianne Chong

In this especial edition for Borinqueña we interview Dr. Dianne Chong, a mentor of many engineers, managers and executives, an outstanding role model and one of the stars at the Boeing Company. It is impossible to measure the impact of someone like Dr. Chong in a career devoted to the advancement of the aerospace industry because her visionary ideas are not only found in the products, they are also found in the minds, mission and goals of so many of us that benefit from her wisdom. She has served on the Board of Trustees, is a Fellow of the American Society of Metals (ASM) International and in 2007 was President of the society. In fact she was the first woman to be president at the Society which was established in 1913.
