The Biomedical Research Education Program (BREP) of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Medical Sciences Campus (MSC) held its Annual Biomedical Summer Internships for middle and high school students during the month of June.  Twenty three (24) Middle School students and twenty eight (27) High School students from three different educational districts participated in the internships. 

In a study published in Critical Inquiry in Language Studies scientists at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez looked at bilingual literacy in Puerto Rico, a country where instruction is predominantly in Spanish and science teaching at the college level often involves the use of both English and Spanish. The authors found professors used three main strategies: using mostly Spanish and English when referring to technical terms; using bilingual teaching materials and diagrams; and assigning English-language readings but discussed them in Spanish.

(San Juan, Puerto Rico – 1 de abril de 2013) - Professor Armando Caussade, an astronomer and educator from Puerto Rico, has been selected to participate in a scientific mission at the South Pole's Amundsen-Scott Station. He will depart on December 2014 for a stay of three weeks. Caussade was selected by the National Science Foundation's PolarTREC program, which pairs educators with scientists working at various research facilities at the Earth's poles. Mr. Caussade will perform research on neutrinos using the IceCube telescope.
