WASHINGTON - The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) does not consider the use of transgenic mosquitoes to control the spread of Zika virus to have any adverse effects on the environment or the population, according to a preliminary study published today.

The Secretary of the Health Department,  Ana Ríus Armendáriz, confirmed that 40 new cases of Zika virus have been reported this week. Amongst these cases one patient required hospilization and 9 were pregnant women.

The Aedes aegypti mosquito that can transmit the viruses that cause dengue, zika, chikungunya and yellow fever is an insect that is easy to control with the proper sanitary measures. Taking these measures would prevent the thousands of viral infections caused by this insect in Puerto Rico every year.

A group of distinguished puertorrican and foreign epidemiologists met for two days with the staff from the Puerto Rico Science and Techonology Trust (FCTI) as part of a collaboration with the University of Puerto Rico and the University of Georgia. This initiative seeks to identify tools and methods to diagnose, treat and prevent zika and other similar viruses.

European researchers described an extremely abnormal fetus' brain from a woman that was infected with the Zika virus during her third trimester. An autopsy revelealed the presence of the Zika virus in the fetal brain.

Even though only one case of Zika virus has been reported in Puerto Rico, the Health Department made a statement today for citizens to prevent the propagation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito and to avoid its bite, specially for pregnant women.

Three days ago two patients were discovered positive with the Zika virus, also called Zika fever. It is important to point out that these are imported cases, meaining that the patients were infected in another country but were diagnosed here.
