The study of the neuroprotective effect of cembranoids against the delayed neurodegeneration caused by organophosphorous (OP).
Dr. Ferchmin’s current research focuses on how to develop novel treatments for victims of industrial accidents, epilepsy and other neurological conditions. The brain depends on oxygen and glucose for survival. Stroke and other brain lesion produce immediate and delayed brain damage. The main culprit of this damage is the uncontrolled release of neurotransmitters by damaged neurons, which overstimulates other neurons that become damaged and start a vicious cycle called excitotoxicity. Chemicals, like insecticides, also damage the brain triggering excitotoxicity.
