About Me and Project Info

About Me:

I'm a Ph.D. Candidate at the Microbiology & Medical Zoology Department from the University of Puerto Rico-Medical Sciences Campus (UPR-MSC) and Co-Founder of Science at a Glance (@Vistazo A La Ciencia). I'm a microbiologist and epidemiologist also training in the areas of mycology, aerobiology, immunology, and science communication. I'm originally from Yauco, Puerto Rico: "El Pueblo del Café". I enjoy dancing salsa, traveling, cooking, outreach activities, and science communication.

Project Info:

In 2014 I received a double major in Industrial Microbiology and Biology at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. During my undergraduate education, I worked in the Symbiosis Laboratory of Dr. Cafaro investigating the antifungal capacity of Actinobacteria associated to the exoskeleton of the termite Nasutitermes costalis.

I earned my master’s degree in Public Health with a concentration in Epidemiology in 2015 (UPR-MSC), identifying the risk factors affecting the quality of life of residents in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico.

Currently, I'm working on my research thesis at the Mycology Laboratory of Dr. Bolaños, studying how the extensive flooding caused by Hurricane María affected indoor fungal spores concentration and characterization in water-damage and flooded homes in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Additionally, I will be evaluating the pro-inflammatory and allergenic potential of fungal spores isolated from these homes.
