Welcome to CienciaPR, an expert and resource network for all who are interested in science and Puerto Rico.
I have a Ph.D. in Marine Sciences with a concentration in Biological Oceanography. My dissertation centered on the molecular systematics of algae belonging to the order Rhodymeniales (Rhodophyta) from Puerto Rico. I also have a M.S. specializing in Mycology. I posses 15 years of experience teaching various Biology related courses and participated in local and international meeting in phycology and mycology. Currently I teach at the UPR- Cayey Campus.
My main interest is algal molecular systematics. At present I am describing various new algae belonging to the Chlorophyta and Rhodophyta. Here are some of my papers describing new algal species for Puerto Rico. Ballantine D.L. and C. Lozada- Troche. 2008. Champia harveyana (Champiaceae, Rhodophyta) from Puerto Rico, Caribbean Sea. Botanica Marina 51(5):38-398.
Ballantine D.L , H. Ruiz and C. Lozada-Troche. 2010. Chamaebotrys prolifera sp. nov. (Rhodymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) from Puerto Rico, Caribbean Sea based on morphology and SSU rDNA sequences. Phycological Research 58:69-77.
Lozada-Troche C. and Ballantine D.L. 2010. Further morphological observations of Coelothrix irregularis and.taxonomic placement based on molecular data Caribbean Journal of Science (In Press).
Lozada -Troche C. and Ballantine D.L. 2010. Champia puertoricensis (Rhodophyta: Champiaceae) from Puerto Rico, Caribbean Sea. Botanica Marina 53:131-141.
Lozada-Troche C., D.L. Ballantine, and H. Ruiz. 2010. Cresia opalescens, a new genus (Rhodymeniaceae, Rhodophyta) from Puerto Rico, Caribbean Sea. Cryptogamie Algologie 31:293-303.
