Puerto Rico inventors and co-inventors were issued 46 patents in 2005 by the US Pantent and Trademark Office, representing a greater than 50% over 2004 when 30 patents were granted to Island researchers. Most were issued to Puerto Ricans working for stateside entities such as Hewlett Packard (n=11) and General Electric (n=8) for the first time since 1999, not a single patent was issued to the UPR. Researchers from Ireland and Singapore, meanwhile, were issued 206 and 466 patents, respectively.
