Activities to celebrate CROEM's 54th Anniversary Announced

Students who obtained perfect scores in mathematics on the College Board and one who was nominated for the Presidential Medal will be recognized.

Mayagüez - The Association of Graduate Students of the Mayagüez Residential Educational Opportunity Center, better known by its acronym CROEM, announced the activities scheduled to celebrate CROEM Week and CROEMITA Day, declared by proclamation of the Puerto Rico Government's Department of State.

"The activities to celebrate the 54th anniversary of the founding of the #1 public school in Puerto Rico are framed within the restrictions and protocols of care and protection in the face of the pandemic that is sweeping the entire country.  Our Center was founded by Dr. Ramón Claudio Tirado in 1968 using the abandoned facilities belonging to the U.S. Army Air Force Radar Base located at Cerro Las Mesas in Mayagüez.  To date, CROEM has graduated more than 10,000 students, making it the number one (1) school in the Public Education System of this country, according to evaluations of the last 15 years. What was at the beginning an educational experiment, today the CROEM institution with residential life 24 hours a day, represents the best alternative for students of high academic performance, with marked interest in science, mathematics and technology," said engineer Rafael Muñoz CROEM 1982, presidential delegate of CROEM ALUMNI and who will be in charge of the activities of the 54th anniversary.

Students who obtained perfect scores in mathematics and one who was nominated for the Presidential Medal will be recognized.

As part of the calendar to celebrate the 54th anniversary along with CROEM Week (February 21-27) and CROEMITA Day (February 27), the organization CROEM ALUMNI will recognize three students from this institution located in Mayagüez.  The students who obtained perfect scores in the area of mathematics in the College Board exams, which measures the academic achievement of university student candidates, are Andrés E. Pérez Acosta (CROEM 2022) and José M Burgos Guntin (CROEM 2022), who will be recognized for their academic achievement.

"Similarly, CROEM ALUMNI will recognize student Héctor M. Lúgaro Rodríguez (CROEM 2022), one of two public school students on the list of 117 candidates for the "Presidential Medal 2022" who was accepted to the prestigious U.S. university institution, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

We are announcing that CROEM Week will be dedicated to the group of students who graduated in 1969, considered the first class to complete the entire year at our Center.  Among the 1969 CROEM Class is Dr. Francisco "Paco" A. Tomei CROEM 1969 (Scientist at the CDC-Atlanta (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Atlanta, Georgia-USA) and the prestigious physician in the state of Florida Dr. Pascasio L. Lopez Padilla CROEM 1969, whose family is involved in the founding of CROEM.

It is important to indicate that taking all precautions in the face of the pandemic that plagues us, our organization will present the CROEM ALUMNI Awards, which have been postponed for the past two years due to COVID restrictions," said Wilson Nazario, executive director of CROEMALUMNI.

"Written statements by José Guillermo Rodríguez, Mayor of Mayagüez".

Mayor of Mayagüez joins the celebration of CROEM Week.

"The Municipal Government of Mayagüez recognizes the academic excellence and contribution to the education of Puerto Rico of the Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas de Mayagüez, our CROEM.  This innovative institution created by Dr. Ramón Claudio Tirado in 1968 has positioned itself as the number one (1) public school in Puerto Rico, which has impacted the entire territory of the American Nation and many countries in Latin America and Europe.  CROEM is the pride of Mayagüez and represents the best experiment in modern education in our country. It is common knowledge of the multiple recognitions and awards obtained by CROEM students in the United States, Latin America and Europe, especially in the areas of science and mathematics.  On behalf of the thousands of residents of the City of Mayagüez and on the 54th anniversary of the celebration of CROEM Week and CROEMITA Day, I would like to express our most sincere congratulations and reaffirm our commitment to this first-class educational center. The more than 10 thousand students who have graduated from CROEM are proof of the quality of education offered by the professors and teaching staff of this institution, which today is directed by Professor Milton Tomassini Del Toro.

The investment and effort to keep this educational center running has borne good fruits, such as the recent appointment by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, of Major General Dr. Lester Martinez Lopez CROEM 1971 as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (that is, a Maricao jíbaro who studied at CROEM will be the person in charge of all medical facilities worldwide, wherever there is a base or presence of the U.S. Army). My congratulations also go to the CROEM ALUMNI organization that brings together the graduates of that institution, which seems to me to be unique in its kind.  Our country owes a great debt and gratitude to these graduates now CROEMITAS, who maintain an organization like CROEM ALUMNI in full support of this educational center with more than half a century of life. CONGRATULATIONS let's celebrate CROEM Week, CROEMITA Day and the first 54 years with the good news of having two students who obtained perfect scores on the College Board exam as did the students Andrés E. Pérez Acosta (CROEM 2022) and José M Burgos Guntin (CROEM 2022), and also celebrate the inclusion of the student Héctor M. Lúgaro Rodríguez (CROEM 2022), in the list of candidates for the "Presidential Medal 2022" and who was accepted to the prestigious MIT University (Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)," concluded Mayagüez Mayor José Guillermo Rodríguez.
