Graduate of the Department of Physics and Electronics of the UPRH hired by NASA

(Humacao, P.R.) - Ms. Shamir Maldonado Rivera, a graduate of the Department of Physics and Electronics of the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao (UPRH) was hired by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to work in the area of electronic engineering, focused on research and development of aerospace technology.

"The contribution that our graduates make to Puerto Rico and the world is evidenced by news like this.  It is a great pride, as rector, professor and alumna of URPH to know these success stories because it validates how relevant the education offered at the country's public university is. At UPRH we remain committed to offering quality academic experiences that enrich the academic development of our students.  Seeing them achieve their personal and professional goals is a cause for celebration. Congratulations to Shamir Maldonado and the team of UPRH faculty and staff who were part of his achievement!" said Dr. Aida I. Rodríguez Roig, rector of the institution.

Shamir Maldonado came to UPRH as a high school student from Ponce, to carry out his science fair project under the mentorship of Prof. Nicholas J. Pinto. Eventually, he joined the Department of Physics and Electronics to pursue his bachelor's degree where he participated in undergraduate research, attended conferences and several internships, including Penn State University and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  He also served as president of the Physics and Electronics Student Association.

After graduating in 2019, he joined the aerospace and defense industry in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Currently, he is working on projects manufacturing electronic devices and smart systems for aircraft and extreme environments at NASA John H. Glenn Research Center.

Her aspiration is to provide her essence in leadership positions, expand her knowledge in diverse areas and also become a flight director at the same agency.

"It's been a dream come true and I never thought it would happen so soon. And I urge any student to be persevering, but above all patient. Don't compare your path with others, and when opportunities don't exist, create them. Dare to connect with mentors and/or professionals who can advise you and always be willing to learn new things," advised Shamir Maldonado.

For his part, Dr. Rogerio Furlan, director of the Department of Physics and Electronics, expressed his delight with this news. "Shamir's story is one of many that successfully represent us in the field of science.  We are very proud of his achievements and may this example serve future young people who are interested in the world of science, especially physics," said the doctor, who also announced that this department is offering a new minor concentration in Astronomy.

Students interested in applying for admission to the Department of Physics and Electronics may do so through the Admissions Office or by calling 787-850-9301
