“Doing science” is to generate knowledge. The process of generating knowledge does not involve any feelings nor does it allow you to know if your findings have any value or not.

This is because science is a human and social process.  The people who give value to the new knowledge generated are the scientists themselves who are people just like you and me.

Science like you've never heard it before. 

SAN JUAN, PR – Puerto Rican science will be the main course on April 18, starting at 7:00 pm, at Lote 23, in Santurce. As part of their activities, the March for Science-Puerto Rico will be presenting "Historias de #CienciaBoricua @ Lote 23." 

The event will feature personal stories about science and adventures in the pursuit of knowledge and innovation. Through these stories, Puerto Rican scientists will share how science touches every aspect of our lives—including their own.

SAN JUAN, PR — This coming Earth Day, Saturday April 22, Puerto Rico will join over 514 concurrent events around the world with March for Science–Puerto Rico. The event will begin at 11:00 a.m., at Plaza Colon in Old San Juan. From there the March will head towards the Capitol and end in the Pabellón de la Paz in Luis Muñoz Rivera Park, where it will join the Para la Naturaleza Fair, where the public can enjoy exhibitions and scientific activities for all ages.

 

CienciaPR to co-organize March for Science–Puerto Rico

The nonprofit organization Ciencia Puerto Rico (CienciaPR), the largest network of Puerto Rican scientists in the world, joins the March for Science-Puerto Rico as a co-organizer.

The March for Science-Puerto Rico, will take place April 22, 2017 (Earth Day) beginning at 11:00 am at Plaza Colon in Old San Juan, moving towards the Capitol and ending at the Pavilion of Peace in Luis Muñoz Rivera Park, where it will join the Feria Para la Naturaleza, where the public will enjoy exhibitions and scientific activities for all ages. The March is one of more than 425 simultaneous events around the world to represent, celebrate and defend science.

The Agents of Change Empowerment and Retention Program, best known by the Spanish acronym PARACa, is an initiative organized and carried out by the non-profit organization Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción (MPA). MPA is composed of students and young professionals aware of the great challenges facing our society both today and the consequences that we could suffer tomorrow. This group of emerging professionals is characterized by recruiting agents of change who are identified by their commitment, leadership and execution at a young age with Puerto Rican society and who are willing to work for the progress and well-being of the country.

It is with great pride that we share with you CienciaPR’s first annual report, a compendium of the most significant achievements of our organization in 2016.

The report marks the tenth anniversary of our community, which saw the light of day on January 2006. It has been incredibly inspiring to see how over the last ten years the CienciaPR network has grown, and with it, the number of ideas and projects that place our community of scientists and STEM professionals at the service of the Puerto Rican people.

Pasteur said that although science has no homeland, scientists do. Since I've been thinking of myself as a scientist, I’ve thought of myself as a Puerto Rican scientist. My concerns about science and Puerto Rico have always gone hand in hand and with them a deep interest and commitment to contribute, through science for the betterment of my country.

Like many, the leadership of Ciencia Puerto Rico is concerned by the results of the U.S. presidential election. This period has revealed great divisions and a level of disaffection, both in Puerto Rico and in the United States, which are impossible to ignore. It is no secret that the president-elect has taken anti-science and anti-environment positions.
