Protecting Las Bocas

In depths of 300 to 600 meters above sea level flow rivers of sustainable ideas that emerge with the goal of designating the Las Bocas Canyon, between Barranquitas and Comerio, a natural reserve. Recently, the Committee Pro-Natural Reserve Las Bocas Canyon and the School of Architecture of the University of Puerto Rico, started a joint project to create an eco-friendly house in the zone comprised by the Canyon.

With the theme Learning Biotechnology as Team through Research and Interdisciplinary Centers, the Hemispheric Center for Cooperation in Engineering and Applied Sciences Research and Education (CoHemis) of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez (RUM), had their summer camp BETTeR-IC 2007 from July 7 to the 13th. The purpose of the summer camp was to allow students and teachers to get involved and learn about biotechnology and related sciences.

Medalist mathematicians

They are silver and bronze medalists; although this is not a sports competition. They were awarded for their analytical abilities in solving mathematical problems. Sara Rodríguez and Aravind Arun represented Puerto Rico in the IX Mathematics Olympics of Central America and the Caribbean, recently celebrated in Mérida, Venezuela.

Dream of becoming an astronaut comes true

As an ‘astronaut’ with the rank of Discovery Specialist II, Puerto Rican teacher Jacqueline López Vargas only had an hour and a half to learn how to use the tools to repair and antenna at the space station. López Vargas was selected among 268 science and mathematics teachers from 21 countries and 43 states of the United States to complete an intense curriculum focused on space science and exploration and a training similar to those astronauts take. Her team, called Determination, was formed by 14 teachers, mostly from the United States, but also from India, the Czech Republic, Poland and Honduras.

Hunting dreams and miracles

Doctor Luis José Almodóvar Fábregas, neurosurgeon, chief resident of the neurosurgery section of the Medical Center’s University Hospital, is days away from graduating from the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico in a specialty very few accomplish. Once he has achieved this goal, he will go outside of Puerto Rico to compliment his skills. A year ago he was accepted in the renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center, in Houston, Texas, where he will complete a subspecialization in oncologic neurosurgery. Once he concludes his training, he will become the first Puerto Rican in doing this. Almodóvar Fábregas is also an inventor. He invented an instrument which is waiting for its patent, while the prototype is being made. The instrument is a rotary needle carrier that allows more efficient suturing and has a moving range that other instruments lack. This carrier will be “universal”, for right and left-handed persons, like doctor Almodóvar Fábregas.

Entrepreneurship program for students

Public School students will become entrepreneurs and present their business plans to industry leaders in the national competition of the “I am a future entrepreneur 2006-2007” program. The activity will be on May 9, 2007 and is sponsored by the Industrials Association of Puerto Rico (AIPR), as part of the Educational Alliances program of the Department of Education. In the event, eight teams representing the AIPR regions will present their business plans and a jury composed of industry leaders will select the best three projects.

Advances in biotechnology

The Industrial Biotechnology (Biotec) program of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez (RUM) is very active in several initiatives that reinforce teir academic agenda and promote Puerto Rico’s economic development, said Dr. Rosa Buxeda, director of Biotec. This involves projects that range from professional trainings, to donations and new curricula in that discipline. In collaboration with the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company (PRIDCO), Biotec will be offering training courses in industrial biotechnology. On the other hand, Millipore of Puerto Rico recently donated a Quick-Scale chromatography column to the Biotechnology Program. According to Buxeda, the equipment donated by Millipore will strengthen the program’s infrastructure in protein purification. Another initiative is the biotechnology workshops for teachers at the Dr. Pedro Perea Fajardo vocational school, which started in April and will extend to May 2007, and from August 2007, 20 selected students will take the biotechnology courses at the Vocational school and at the RUM labs. Lastly, the Biotechnology Program is part of the project “Maleta cultural: de la mano la ciencia y el arte” (Cultural briefcase: Science and Art going hand in hand), of the Puerto Rico Museum of Contemporary Art and the Amgen Foundation.
