Abstract: Public communication of science aims to make scientific knowledge and its benefits accessible to a variety of audiences. In particular, the communication of science through mass media represents an important source of life-long, informal science learning that helps shape the public’s perception of science and scientists; foster support for the scientific enterprise; and inspire next-generation scientists. Unfortunately, when science is communicated it is seldom contextualized to the reality and cultural values of underrepresented and underserved communities, further marginalizing them from the process of science. Moreover, science communication rarely features scientists or communicators of color, or issues that disproportionately affect underserved communities. This talk will discuss how online technologies are providing new ways to diversify science communication, give visibility to scientists with diverse perspectives and draw attention to disparities faced by underrepresented and underserved communities.
