AC3 Lead Educator

The AC3 Lead Educator will be primarily responsible for leading instructional programs at AC3. This includes the delivery on field trips and summer courses for students, educators, and the public. The AC3 Lead Educator will receive training in the curriculum of courses developed by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory DNA Learning Center, and therefore have a strong background in molecular biology and genetics. This educator will lead DNA Barcoding programs, and therefore participate in the collection of samples (e.g. plants and insects), requiring light field work. Candidates must have demonstrated teaching ability and must also be able to work in a dynamic collaborative environment. This includes the ability for this role to organize meetings and visits, teach, and interact with colleagues in Spanish and English. The ideal candidate will also have experience in computing (e.g. coding in Python, Bash, etc.) to assist with the delivery of computational skills courses, although this is not required. The ideal candidate may also have experience and certification in teaching at the secondary level in Puerto Rico. 

Flexible scheduling will require some weekend or evening work. Some travel between the Arecibo Observatory and schools or collaborator sites across Puerto Rico is required. Occasional travel for training and as part of outreach activities to elsewhere in the United States and internationally is required. 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • Bachelor’s degree with significant coursework in science (biology or molecular genetics preferred)
  • Bioinformatics and/or computing experience preferred but not required.
  • Strong science background required with an interest and/or experience in teaching.
  • Proficiency in Spanish and English.
  • Certification/qualification for public school teaching in Puerto Rico desirable but not required.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing hands-on genetics and molecular biology instruction to precollege students visiting the DNALC for academic year field trips, summer camps, and extended research projects.
  • Presenting public tours at the Visitor Center and its laboratories.
  • Delivering in-school instruction.
  • Assisting with student research programs.
  • Conducting teacher training.
  • Developing teaching modules.
