CDC Foundation Fellow

The CDC Foundation announces an opportunity for two individuals with extensive experience conducting research synthesis and secondary data analyses, preferably on the following topics: adolescent health, HIV, STD, or reproductive health, and/or lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) health. Doctoral-level training in public health, related social sciences, or interdisciplinary humanities with a strong statistical background is required. Fellowships will begin in August/September 2013 and are anticipated to last two years, contingent on funding availability. The Fellows will be independent contractors and will not become employees of CDC or CDC Foundation. The appointments are full-time at CDC in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Fellows will support a CDC project to synthesize research literature and conduct secondary data analyses on protective factors and interventions to improve health outcomes among LGBT youth. This project seeks to enhance the scientific and programmatic response to HIV, STDs, and other sexual and mental health issues among LGBT youth by (1) identifying and addressing critical scientific gaps on protective factors and interventions that promote positive health outcomes among LGBT youth; and (2) developing and disseminating practical resources based on those findings for programmatic use. The project is funded by a grant from the Arcus Foundation through the CDC Foundation.

The Fellows should be self-directed and will lead major components of the project that require collaborative work with staff and other research fellows at CDC’s National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TBs Prevention. Fellows will be housed in that Center’s Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH) within the Research Application and Evaluation Branch.

Fellows’ duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • conducting systematic literature review(s), including database searches and data processing, extraction, review, and synthesis

  • conducting meta-analyses

  • analyzing existing literature to identify gaps and develop research questions

  • developing analytic plans and conducting secondary data analyses using appropriate methods

  • preparing scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals

  • translating research findings into communication tools (e.g., fact sheets, webinars, etc.) for use by youth-focused agencies and organizations

Applicants demonstrating their experience with the following skills are preferred:

    • complex survey analysis, including weighted data

    • multilevel and structural equation modeling

    • systematic literature review and meta-analysis

    • strong writing ability

Demonstrated research experience related to adolescents; lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered persons; and/or sexual health outcomes is preferred. Applicants should send a CV and cover letter to Nicole Liddon at nliddon@cdc.gov by Friday, July 19, 2013.
